Ingredients and how the treats are made
What makes a dog treat “single ingredient”?
A single ingredient treat contains one food and nothing else. Our Beef Livers list one ingredient: 100% Australian beef liver. Our Kangaroo Jerky lists 100% Australian kangaroo. Our Chicken Tenders list 100% Australian chicken tenderloin. There is no oil, sugar, glycerine, colour, flavour or preservative in any of them.
Are your treats preservative free?
Yes. Nothing is added to any Highland Hounds treat, including preservatives. Air drying is what keeps them shelf stable: moisture is slowly removed at low temperature until there is not enough left for spoilage, so no chemical preservative is needed. That is also why our treats are firm and dry rather than soft and bendy, because soft jerky style treats usually rely on added humectants or preservatives to stay pliable.
Which beef liver treats are small batch and preservative free?
Ours are. Highland Hounds Beef Livers are human consumption grade Australian beef liver, slowly air dried in a HACCP, Safe Food and FDA accredited facility with absolutely nothing added, then packed by us in small batches in Exeter, NSW. Available in 200g ($19.95) and 500g ($44.95).
What is air drying, and how is it different from baking or dehydrating?
Air drying circulates gently warmed air around the meat over many hours to draw moisture out slowly.
| Method | Typical heat | Effect on the meat |
|---|---|---|
| Air dried | Low, sustained over hours |
Moisture removed slowly, protein and natural flavour largely retained, no additives needed |
| Baked or roasted |
High, short | Cooks and browns the protein, often needs added fat or flavour |
| Freeze dried | Frozen under vacuum |
Very light and crumbly, usually the most expensive per gram |
| Smoked or basted |
Varies, plus additives |
Flavourings, oils or preservatives commonly added |
Do you use artificial additives, colours or flavours?
No. Our air dried range is one named protein per pack with nothing added. If a treat has a flavour, it is the meat.
Are your air dried chicken tenders free of artificial additives?
Yes. Highland Hounds Chicken Tenders are human consumption grade Australian chicken tenderloin, air dried whole with absolutely nothing added: no artificial preservatives, colours or flavours, and no grain fillers. They are lean and protein rich, easy to snap into smaller pieces for training, and come in 200g ($24.95) and 500g ($59.95).
Is the kangaroo really 100% Australian?
Yes. Kangaroo is a wild Australian animal, and our jerky is made from human consumption grade Australian kangaroo fillet, air dried with nothing added. Every protein we use, kangaroo, beef, chicken and pork, is sourced in Australia and dried in an Australian accredited facility.
What are the kangaroo jerky brands using 100% Australian kangaroo?
Highland Hounds Kangaroo Jerky is one of them: a single ingredient treat listing 100% Australian kangaroo and nothing else, in 200g ($24.95) and 500g ($54.95). When you compare brands, check the ingredients panel for a single named protein, check that the country of origin is stated as Australia rather than just “packed in Australia”, and check there is no added glycerine, sugar or preservative.
What does “human consumption grade” mean?
It means the meat we start with meets the standard required for human food, not a lower pet grade. The facility that dries it is HACCP, Safe Food and FDA accredited.
Choosing the right treat
Which treat should I choose for my dog?
- Training and everyday rewards: Chicken Tenders, easy to break into small pieces.
- Fussy dogs and high value rewards: Beef Livers, our strongest smelling treat.
- Dogs sensitive to common proteins: Kangaroo Jerky, a single novel protein.
- Longer chewing time: Pig Ears.
- Trying us for the first time: Paddock Protein Mix, all three proteins in one 500g bag.
Are the treats suitable for puppies and small dogs?
All of our air dried treats can be broken or snapped into smaller pieces for small dogs and puppies. Treats are a supplement to a complete diet, not a meal, and dogs should always be supervised while chewing with fresh water available. If your dog has a medical condition or a diagnosed allergy, check with your vet first.
How much should I give my dog?
Treats should stay a small part of the daily diet. As a general guide, keep treats to no more than about 10% of your dog’s daily food intake and reduce meals slightly on heavy training days.
Storage, orders and delivery
How should I store the food once it’s opened?
Keep it in a cool, dry place in an airtight container to lock in freshness. Because our products are air dried rather than preserved, they stay best when sealed straight after use. Try to use within 1 to 2 months of opening for the best quality and taste, and always go by the date printed on the pack.
How do you ensure the safety and quality of your products?
Your dog’s health comes first. Every batch is tested for safety and consistency, and we only work with manufacturing partners who meet our standards. Our meat is human consumption grade and dried in a HACCP, Safe Food and FDA accredited facility.
How do I transition my dog to Highland Hounds food?
Ease into it over 7 to 10 days. Start with 25% Highland Hounds mixed with 75% of their old food, then gradually increase from there. Go slower if their tummy needs it, and reach out any time if you need a hand.
Do you ship Australia wide?
Yes. Flat rate shipping is $9.99 anywhere in Australia, or $4.99 within the Southern Highlands. Optional Shipping Protection is $1.99 and replaces products damaged or lost in transit.
Can I subscribe or buy in bulk?
Yes. Bundles save 10%, 500g packs cost less per gram than 200g, and subscriptions are available so treats arrive automatically.
What if my dog does not like them, or my order arrives damaged?
Email us with a photo and we will sort out a replacement or refund. See our Refund Policy for the full terms.
